Down the Well: Pattern Mixing, Bloggles, and EBEW

Anyone who’s read this blog more than…well, once?, has borne witness to my love of pattern mixing.  Even before I fell down the well of ridiculous blogger dressing I was a huge fan of putting florals with stripes or polka dots with geometric prints.  And what’s not to love?  There’s something about the riotous confusion of shapes and colors that makes my heart get all jelly-like.  In my more tame moods I really appreciate the look of combining different patterns in a neutral color palate.

Now that I peer at life through my bloggles (definition: “blogger goggles,” noun, items which obscure manner in which non-blogger people dress and insist that huge buns, half-tucked shirts, and mega-heels are “normal”) pattern mixing seems like a mundane wardrobe standard.  It’s so popular that this month’s Everybody, Everywear is all about this favorite sartorial past time of mine.  And what a lovely thing, to see so many women rocking out something I love so well.  My own outfit of the day (a floral midi with a striped top) unfortunately wasn’t recorded, but included are some past instantiations of the wonder of print on print.

Wasn't kidding about it being my favorite. :)

What are your thoughts on pattern mixing?  Is it something you do well and/or often or do you stick to less complicated looks?  Anybody else rocking some mad bloggles?

I bow down to you, oh Queen of Pattern Mixing. You need a crown. Preferably one in a polka dot print.

I would never say no to a crown. Perhaps we should find a queendom and rule it together. I’ll be Queen of Pattern of Mixing, you can be Queen of the Long Legs. How’s that work for yas?

i really like it, but don’t do it all too often.
i’ve got an amazing pattern-mixed outfit waiting to be worn, but i need a special occasion…
or at least convince my boyfriend to not wear jeans, and take me out.

I Love all your mixes. I myself have been somewhat hesitant to do it much in previous outfits. But, after playing with prints and patterns to put together my outfit for EBEW, I intend to rock it more. There are so many fun things you can do! And you prove that. <3

Bloggles haha I like it! You are such a pro at mixing patterns. When I grow up (age not height cause we know that’s not going anywhere), I want to mix patterns like you.

Bloggles? I love it! It’s kind of like beer goggles, but without beer. It may have been bloggles tha inspired me to paint every one of my fingernails a different color last week.

You make pattern mixing look effortless. Rock on, sister.

Going to put on stripes and florals, stat. I really like the lace as a print, too!

Please, give me a lesson in how you do this so well! I saw one on another blog but it wasn’t as much fun as this, so please do a How To!

Bloggles! Fell down a well! ROFL! You are the funniest! I have this Alice in Wonderland image of you falling through space dressed in mixed patterns. And as for my thoughts on those: I’m amazed when I see someone pattern mix well. I cannot do it. The logic of it escapes me. I’m just not brave enough to risk it and end up looking like and 80s living room. ;) Love ya!

I love how you mix prints! You’s a brave betch! I’m starting to try to mix patterns here and there. It’s funny when I do, I get a call from my mom saying, “what the hell? I don’t like that outfit.” Old people don’t get it! Or at least my carthart wearin’ momma. I miss you like a lot. Get your ass back to Chi stat so you can teach me your ways of pattern mixing!

My lord, I so hear you on the bloggles. I am pretty sure I have been wearing them so hard these last few months that they are now a permanent fixture. Why, just today I bought a pair of clogs… CLOGS I tell you!!

  17. August 15, 2011 1:55 pm

oh man, the bloggles. so, so true. that said, I love your pattern mixing here — they’re all fabulous examples!

Right?! The bloggles get me more often that I like to admit. :)

I’m so glad you included pics of all your ensembles, instead of just links to them. And the Bloggles idea is way too funny–and WAY too true! (I’m sitting here with a bun the size of Kansas on the very top of my head…)
