Slippery Devil: Happiness, Soulmates, and, Oh Yeah, a Coupon Code!
Happiness is a slippery devil. It’s rare, I think, to actually know you’re happy when you’re happy. It’s a state of being so longed for that most people seem to spend their time searching for it even when they have it, only to realize it was there it when it’s gone. And so I consider myself lucky to have spent the last week knowing, without a doubt, how very happy I am. I love my life in general- I study something that fascinates me in a city I adore, I get to read and learn languages and travel for a living, I’m healthy and so is everyone I love, etc etc. I’m content. But then my two very best friends in the whole world came to visit me in Chicago and I realized on an entirely different level how very good life can be.

Slippery Devil: dress (Cider Dress, c/o Shabby Apple), blazer (vintage, New Bohemia in Austin, $20), tights (HUE), boots (random, $30), belt (thrifted, $3).
These ladies have been my best friends since we were children. As girls and teenagers we studied together, wandered the woods together, cried over boys and applied to colleges together. We made mixes, shared books, cooked a bajillion dinners, took road trips, and had shockingly few arguments. We grew up, moved away, learned things about ourselves, changed into (supposed) adults. Through all that, they’ve been constants in my life. Despite years in different cities and even on different continents, we’ve remained the closest I’ve ever been to two other people in my life. And though we don’t see each other as often as we’d like, I have no question that these women will be, for the rest of my life, what most people mean when they use that cheesy phrase “my soulmate.” Lucky me; I have two.
These shots were taken in downtown Chicago when we went for brunch and shopping and goofing off as only girlfriends can do. I chose this Shabby Apple dress because it’s incredibly comfortable, has fun little details, and actually covers m’parts, unlike lots of dresses for sale these days. Looking at the photos now, though, I wonder if I was drawn to it because of how radiant a color it is. It reflects, on some level, the joy that is being lost in the world of childhood memories, inside jokes, rambling conversations, and the unchanging happiness of honest to goodness love.
In honor of the joy of friendship (or maybe just because it seems like a wise move), Shabby Apple is offering all sartoriography readers a 10% discount. Check our their site and use the coupon code sartoriography10off to make friends with a new dress. :)

K obviously I am in seminar mode b/c if we were discussing this post in class I would bring up the fact that I got a strong sense the blogger was alluding to Chicago as one of her soulmates as well. It shows in your photos.

Isn’t it funny how friends reassure about things, even if you’re totally content with life. So glad that you had fun with your friends. Now when are we getting together again?

Oh, I love seeing these pictures. I miss all of you ladies so much, the hours of laughter, movies , talking , present opening, and more talking that were spent here. You are very blesssed indeed to have the long lasting friendship and love of both of them, as they are blessed to have you.

what a beautiful post! and I love the colour of the dress!
You’re so lucky to have friends like these! I love that you tied your feelings for them to the bright, beautiful color of this dress. And the jacket- so awesome!!
I got a little worried when I saw not a silly face from you… until I scrolled down further. Phew. All is right in this world.
Your blazer is tops and so are girly friends. I love me some girl time!!!!
This dress! SO PRETTY! That color looks amazing on you… and a purple zipper!? I love that people think of small details like that. Adorable.
I really like your dress! I used to refuse to wear orange because I always thought it looked bad on me. Then I found the most awesome bright orange maxi skirt that I want to wear everyday. After seeing your orange dress, I want one too! Orange might become my new favorite color…
Thanks so much for commenting and visiting. Glad to know the crazy road cone orange of the dress get you inspired.
This dress is actually more of a pumpkin color in person, but the photos amped up the color a bit.
I covet that dress! And the scenery is so beautiful! I wish I have spent more time in Chicago. And I wish I had such great friends like yours. Mine are fun, but I don’t think we’re as close as this.
This is a beautiful post and you’re beautiful in it. I love the orange dress and, most of all, the picture of you with your friends. You all look so pretty and happy.
How amazing does that dress look on you?? So stunning! And I love that you paired it with that cardigan.
I know exactly what you mean about those moments of “extreme happiness”, for lack of better word or phrase. I have a pretty good life and I’m happy, but I definitely have moments, usually when I’m visiting home, that are just pure bliss. I always wish that I could stay there forever, just completely change my life, but then I wonder if that feeling of bliss could actually be a constant state, or if the situation would loose its magic if it wasn’t so rare.
Between the dress, the friends, and the background I could’t love this post more. It’s perfect!
I agree with everyone- this is an amazing dress and these seem like such amazing friends. You’re so lucky to have them all (and the dress for free!!)
Your thoughts on happiness are so spot on! It’s so easy to be constantly striving and never stop to enjoy the happy moments along the way. It’s so easy not to appreciate the happy moments and then look back in retrospect wishing for those moments back again! I’m so glad that you were able to spend the last week in a state of bliss!! And I love how pretty and happy your bright orange dress is! It’s totally conveying the happiness!
Thanks, Becca! I’m glad I was able to have that week, too. And I’m so glad other people have had that joyful realization of, “Whoa, I’m so happy!” Nothing beats it, eh?
Yeeeah that blazer looks so great on you! Just reaffirming what a an awesome purchase it was
And you and your gals are too cute!! I can totally relate to reminding yourself to really take in those blissful moments. The best thing is those memories will always be there when times get tough.
xo
