Hobos, Pioneers, and Bloggers vs Nature: Outfits #20, #21, and #22

December 15, 2010

Did you know that I’m a fan of hobos?  Because I am.  I’m pretty much obsessed with them.  Clare can testify.  Hobos make me think of trains.  Trains make me think of the notion of inevitable “progress.”  Progress makes me think of doing another 30 for 30 post and moving on down the line of my blog “to do” list.

Alternately, hobos make me think of trains, which make me think of circuses, which make think of the phrase “let’s get this show on the road” (a favorite of my mom’s when I was lollygagging as a child, as I was wont to do).  That’s what I’m doing- I’m getting my 30 for 30 show on the road.

Here’s an equation for those of you who need visuals: hobo–>trains–>progress–>MORE POSTS!  Or, hobos–>trains–>circuses–>show+road–>MORE POSTS!  Bam.  Now, how’d I get to thinking about hobos?  Crap.

Outfits 20 and 21: N Sync: These are posts from the Thanksgiving weekend when my best friend in the whole world came to visit and we traipsed around Chicago, speaking in accents and confusing the pants off people who don’t understand the bond of those who’ve been besties since childhood.  We’re annoyingly in sync, the two of us.  But not like the really bad pop group; we’d never be a really bad pop group.  We’d only be an excellent pop group (pop duo?).  Anyway, this non-annoying pop duo had issues with badly lit photos, hence the few outfit shots.  Enjoy anyway, or I’ll sing you an actual N Sync song and you’ll perish with the great pain of those who understand good music.

Susanah in my coat. Doesn't she look just perfectly vintage-ified?

Outfit 22: No Parking: On the first day of big Chi snow Clare and I wandered out of our toasty apartment and played fashion blogger.  By this I mean we took off the only things keeping us from freezing to death- our coats- and stood in the frigid cold trying to look cute for photos.  Basically, we gave the finger to nature.  We’re pretty much pioneers, refusing to be subdued by the outdoors.  There should be a show about us: Bloggers vs Nature.  It’d have very heavy-handed theme music, I’d imagine, but no, not music by N Sync.

No Parking: Correspondence Dress (thrifted, $3), gold t-neck (H&M, $4), tights (Filene's Basement, $7), socks (Target, $2), belt (thrifted, $1), boots (random, $30).

Ooh ohh, love. Love for those boots (where did she get them?!) and love for all the photos of No Parking. What a great background!

You and your blogger friends- Clare, Susannah, Paige, Merl- are the best thrifters I’ve ever seen. How did you get so good? Maybe it’s passed down from your moms or grandmoms!

I really love that mail dress. The setting for those photos is fantastic — I love the fire dept sign!

Umm, I think we have some parts of the same brain or something, because I am obsessed with hobos too. I think it started with reading the Boxcar Children when I was little, except they were hobos for like a week. Athens is a really poor town outside of the college-y areas. There is a camp in the outskirts called Tent City where a lot of them reside and I want to one day get in and talk with them and document all of their stories like in a video or something. And then give them food and clothes.

That sounds kind of insensitive when I re-read that, like I would want to exploit them for their stories or for my own interests. I guess what I mean is that homelessness can be pretty overlooked sometimes in cities, and getting documentation of it can often show another side to the issue or to another, deeper problem in society. Eek, sorry to be so long-winded!

I already replied to this via Twitter, but just so you know: I totally get what you’re saying. There’s nothing wrong w fascination, as long as it’s respectful, and I think you were/are. I’m also curious about the story of people who live itinerate lives, so we can document together some day. :)

I love that dress and the last set of pictures! I don’t really care for hobos- they sort of creep me out- but I can see how they are important for this post. :) Where did you take those last pictures? And where did your friend get her boots? I want a pair jsut like that but can’t ever find any.

In that dress you can park wherever you want. It fits you like a glove and looks so good with the turtleneck underneath.

Haha, I *LOVE* this post!! So many outfits though! And my wife thinks I’m crazy for “playing fashion blogger” in the freezing cold too! (Especially when I ask her to play along and take the pictures!) Your friend is so fabulous too! And all this talk about music reminds me that I saw you wear a Gogol Bordello shirt in a post a while back and got excited butnever commented on it! (I just discovered them not long ago! :) ). I love all the yellow in your last outfit, especially the socks! I got bold with yellow tights recently and will be posting the outfit soon! Oh, and I love the skirt and boots in the first outfit!! Super cute! And thank you so much for the comment the other day, and I certainly agree that “gender neutral” and “masculinity” are complicated terms… for a blog post or comment! Oh, I love the “men’s tee” too! Its amazing how many items of clothing society can “gender”. And I love all the pictures in this post! :)

I love this coat, and the bright print dress! Fabulous looks.

Su looks amazing in that minty blue! Also, the Correspondence Dress is fantastic and looks fantastic on you, and the photo of you in it standing in front of Lake Michigan is both surreal and oddly like a model photo shoot.
