Art, the Chicago Area, and AREA Chicago (and also rad vests!)

August 11, 2010

You know what I love?  Art.  I love art of all kinds- painting, sculpture, photography, dance, music, etc etc etc forever.  I decided this summer that I was going to do a better job of taking advantage of all the access to art I have here in Chicago.  I’ve spent a lot of time at various museums since I moved here two years ago (the Art Institute and I are besties), but this Saturday I went to my first independent art show.  It was curated by my friend Rachel and sponsored by AREA Chicago, an awesome local magazine focused on art, education, and activism.  The pieces were mostly painting, print, or photography, with some really cool tactile and interactive pieces mixed in.  Visitors could bid on art (the show was a fundraiser), snack on hummus, and make their own maps of Chicago.  It took me forever to decide which piece to choose, but finally decided on a screen print that…I won!  Yay!

My stupid camera has once again been wonky of late, so no photos of the art show itself but (thanks to Clare), here’s what I wore.  That’s what everyone cares about anyway, right?  You art haters.  ;)  No, seriously, I loved this outfit.  It was comfortable, cool, and made it easy to do all the walking and train switching it took to get to Pilsen.  And how rad is this vest?  I heart it like an 80′s elementary schooler would.  And the bag- it’s my new favorite…even though I’ve had it for months.

Art, The Chicago Area, and AREA Chicago: black dress (Target, $15); vest, belt, and bag (Unique Thrift Store, all $3ish), shoes (gift from my moms).

Oh, I so have art envy! I used to live close to Chicago, and so enjoyed making pilgrimages to various museums and galleries. But, now that I live in a smaller place, those kinds of cultural things are a bit fewer and far between.

This, my dear, is a perfect outfit for your day of arting! I have such a love of fun, colorful vests that I think will always betray the fact that I was in middle school in the early ’90′s. (I made no less than three vests out of leftover fabric from my Mom’s curtain-sewing projects. Think bright, bold florals, accentuated with kitchy pins. Wish I still had them, actually.) Great colors, and I love all the beading detail.

Sigh, I was in love as soon as I saw the beading on the vest. Fantastic outfit!

Working in museums, I sometimes forget what it’s like to be a visitor and get all excited for art, dinosaurs, King Tut, etc. You’ve inspired me to go and play tourist in a museum that isn’t mine this weekend.

like katie above said, i, too, work in a museum so sometimes and tend to forget to enjoy what we have!

perhaps i should untether myself from my desk and walk around the galleries today!

DO IT! :) Even if it’s just for the blood flow, it can’t be a bad idea. Maybe I should come visit you at work some time. Then I’d have an excuse to see MORE art!
